A handyman’s advice (from experienced handyman services who cover the whole of Johannesburg and Gauteng), would be to let the professional handyman do it. However, if you would like to try install your new toilet yourself, or at least know what’s involved, then read on. It is moderately simple task, in fact – provided the new installation is the same size as the old one, and if you are prepared to go slow and be exact in your measurements, placements and diligent with hygiene, cleaning and drying.
Removing the old toilet
Make sure that you have switched off the water supply to the toilet, then, using protective gloves for hygienic purposes, scoop out the remaining water from both the cistern and bowl. You can then loosen the bolts holding the cistern in place, detach the pipe and lift it off the bowl and away from the wall. Then remove the bolts holding the unit in place and loosen the sealant on the pedestal by working it back and forth until it lifts away.
Clean the area and prepare it for a new installation
Scrape away any remaining sealant and don’t hold back on the bleach. Make sure the whole area is clean, bacteria and mould free, and properly dry in preparation for the new installation. It’s also a god idea to ’plug’ the open drainpipe with a towel or heavy rag to stop gasses and smells escaping from the sewer.
Install the new toilet
Once the area is clean and completely dry, you must replace the old flange around the pipe with a new one. Drive the mounting bolts through the new flange into the floor, making sure it’s fixed in place and then place a new wax ring around the opening. You can now put the new pedestal in place. Seal the entire area where the pedestal connects with the floor with fresh sealant, ensuring that it is level, that there are no gaps and that the pedestal doesn’t move.
You can then put bolts the through the base and tank and attach the rest of the installation to the pedestal and bolt the cistern to the wall.
There are a few potentially tricky details involved, so contact Showroom Condition today for advice and assistance on installing a new toilet, or for our handyman services in Gauteng, and let us ‘do the dirty work’ for you.
Remember how your mom always used to tell you prevention was better than cure? Well, the same applies when it comes to your home maintenance. Regular, proactive home maintenance goes a long way towards preventing small problems from turning into big headaches.
If you’re famous for ignoring little niggly issues around the house, think about how many times they’ve turned into costly repairs. If you’re honest with yourself, had you dealt with them in the first place, a major problem could’ve been avoided. Think of that dripping tap that leads to your kitchen cupboard having to be replaced, or the glass that fell out of the window because you ignored the fact that the putty needed replacing.
Regular, routine maintenance doesn’t just prevent wear and tear from turning into costly repairs but it enhances the value of your home too.
Improve your property value
Of course, if your gutters are falling and your paint is peeling, your property is going to decline in value… And it’s going to cost you that much more to fix it up than if you’d budgeted for regular, small maintenance jobs all year around. On the plus side, if you are planning to sell your house soon, and you’re able to show a history of regular maintenance, you’re likely to realise a better price on your property when it comes time to sell. Purchasers will appreciate that you’ve taken pride in maintaining your home to a high standard.
It all comes down to being proactive. But, after a busy week at work, do you want to spend your weekend at the hardware store and working on your house?
Let Showroom Condition take care of your home for you instead! From plumbing, to electrical to building and more, give us a call to find out how we can help you!
Your first question is likely to be “what exactly is a monthly household maintenance contract?” Let us explain…
Most of us have all called on a handyman to assist with a problem within the home at some stage – some a lot more regularly than others. There are also several people who choose to take the DIY route and fix these problems themselves. But what happens when the DIY master is too busy to take care of these minor issues as they pop up? Or when a DIY master simply doesn’t exist within your household? That’s where convenient household maintenance contracts come in. Basically, with one of these contracts, you will be able to call on a professional handyman in Johannesburg to come and help you whenever you’re in need… for an affordable, specified fee that you pay on a monthly basis.
You ensure that you keep every aspect of your home in tip top condition. This means that you will be able to save thousands in repair costs – and when the time comes to sell, you won’t need to lay out any cash for renovations or improvements. Your house will already be in an immaculate state. Along with this, you also save time and don’t have to stress about paying for unplanned expenses that may have cropped up.

If you have yet to jump on the eco-friendly bandwagon, now’s your chance to do so! When it comes to home maintenance there is no more affordable or more efficient solution than solar water heating systems. Here are three reasons why you need to consider investing in one:
- They’re Eco-friendly:
Solar water heating systems make use of the sun as a source of energy. This energy is then used to heat the water in your geyser. This means that the systems do not make use of electricity which, in turn, is great news for the environment!
- They’re Cheaper in the Long Run:
While it may be expensive to invest in a solar water heating system initially, you will get your money back (and more) within 5 – 10 years of use. After that period, you will be saving money in bucket loads. Just think about the amount that you are currently paying per month for electricity!
- They’re Easy to Maintain:
Unlike most traditional heating systems, which often need to be maintained and replaced more regularly than we’d like, solar water heating systems are very easy to keep in good condition. Simply call on a trustworthy plumber or handyman to inspect the system once a year, and you’ll be good to go!
Ready to start reducing your carbon footprint? For the most reliable solar water heating installations, it’s always wise to get in touch with Showroom Conditions. As experts in everything from general home maintenance to house painting, we do it all. Call us today for a hassle-free quote!
Considering that the exterior portion of your home is constantly exposed to harsh weather elements, from scorching heat to pouring rain, extra care needs to be taken to make sure that your home’s paint job can stand the test of time. Here are some helpful house painting tips for painting your home’s exterior:
- Choose the right time:
The longevity of your home’s exterior paint job will depend quite substantially on how well it dries after the initial application. Knowing this, it makes sense to paint during the drier periods of year, like in winter. Also, if there is a lot of humidity in the air, you might want to hold off. Any moisture can affect the final result of your paint job!
- Buy Quality Paint:
While you may be keen to save a few extra rands here and there, you will kick yourself in a year’s time when you must repaint all over again. Cheap paint simply doesn’t last as long. So, if you think about it, spending a little bit extra now will save you a lot of money in the long run.
- Prep Properly:
Never paint a wall’s surface if it is dirty or uneven. The paint won’t adhere to it properly and is sure to start peeling much sooner than expected. Proper preparation is essential, so wash and sand to perfection before getting started.
While it is possible to do a good job when it comes to painting the exterior portion of your home, the question is: is it worth the stress and the effort? If you’d prefer the assistance of a professional, it’s time to get in touch with Showroom Condition! As experts in house painting and home maintenance, we will be able to provide you with a service that is truly second to none.

You and many other people take out service plan contracts for your vehicle for it to receive servicing at certain intervals. Benefits of Maintenance Contracts

- time is freed to be spent on other activities
- no more unplanned expenses – the monthly maintenance contract covers your repairs
- You’ll be adding value to your home by keeping it in mint shape and continuously improving its appearance
Not everyone has the acumen to handle tools and use them to fix different issues which arise in the house. Although certain tasks might appear minor, it may be best to hire a professional to do the job.
A handyman is a person skilled at a wide range of repairs, typically around the home. The tasks include repair work and maintenance work – both on the interior and exterior of the home. Jobs done by a handyman include light plumbing jobs such as fixing a leaky toilet or light electric jobs such as changing a light fixture.

A house is a physical structure/dwelling where you live, which provides for your basic needs and safety. On the other hand, a home provides you with the mental and emotional support where you look forward to escape the outside world – a safe haven.
You can easily transform your house into a home by infusing your taste into it, thus making it a place that reflects you. This is the most important step in turning a house into a home. A home is not supposed to be an immaculate, bland canvas; it should say something about the people living there. Display your style by painting the rooms in different colours and put up photos and artwork that reflect your personality.
We know that not everyone is cut out to be a handyman, even less so a painter – that’s why we provide home painting services. Showroom Condition does not merely paint your house; we assist you to transform your house into a home.
The feelings you hope to invoke in a specific room will have a major influence the choice of colours you will utilise:
- Kitchen: whether you see it as the heart of your home or the place you make and keep food, the answers to these questions will determine the shade you paint your kitchen, be it yellow, green or grey.
- Master bedroom: if you wish to ignite creativity and passion consider using shades of red – for a more tranquil and calm effect shades of blue will do the trick.
- General: use yellow sparingly as an accent wall; should you decide to use yellow throughout the room, a weaker, pale shade will work. Green can bring a lot of life to a room, but keep in mind the lighting and the shade you use: too light a shade in a bright room will make things look a bit sickly. Red has a lot of strength and will make a great accent wall. However, an entire room in red may conjure images of a horror movie.
A light shade of grey is able to add a touch of elegance to any room, and will add to, but not over-shadow the colour you choose as your accent. Grey also is a neutral colour that creates a calm and clean impression. It’s great for most rooms in the house. When you finally decide on the ambiance of a room, choose a colour that best embraces and stimulates those feelings.
Real life story
“We recently signed a maintenance contract with a family of four living in a relatively small three bedroom, 2 bathroom house with a cottage. The family took a bit of convincing that a maintenance contract was the way to go for them, but after just a couple of months, they are reaping the rewards.
Like most South African families, both parents work fulltime, so the demands on their leisure time are huge. The house is old but in relatively good condition, but when we looked around, we could see that there was work to be done. Both the adults living in the house lacked the skills to take care of the house’s upkeep and they did not own all the tools required for these tasks.
Within the first month, we were called to repair cracks in the walls, replace faulty electrics and to patch up some old waterproofing. The real advantage is that we get in and fix problems as they arise because we all know that – when it comes to maintaining your home – a ‘stitch in time saves nine’.”
We are here for you
Here at Showroom Condition, we see the scenario time and time again where the home owner has seen a minor fault and put it to the back of his or her mind – perhaps because they weren’t sure exactly what the problem was or they thought they would sort it out when they had a whole bunch of things for a handyman or contractor to work on. But by the time they get round to repairing it, the problem has grown and the bill to repair it has grown exponentially!
With the maintenance contract, small, simple bits of home maintenance can save significant amounts of money because a home owner can rest assured that small problems can be fixed before they turn into major nightmares.

A home is a huge investment, which is why home maintenance is so important to ensuring your investment stays in good condition. However, too many home-owners make some expensive mistakes. Here are four home maintenance mistakes to avoid.
- Treating everything as a DIY project
There are definitely some things you can do yourself to maintain your home. Varnishing wooden trims and clearing gutters are just a couple of examples. But there are many things that have to be done by professionals. Sadly there are many home owners who think they will save money by doing things themselves, only to do it wrong and have to get professionals in to fix much more than what was originally needed.
- Going cheap on certain things
There are certain elements of a home that need significant investment if they are to stand the test of time. If you are replacing permanent things in the home such as bathtubs and electrical systems, it’s very important that you avoid taking the cheap route. These are big jobs and cost a lot to replace, so using cheap products will only mean having to pay for replacements and repairs later on.
- Hiring casual workers for specialised jobs
The problem with hiring a guy with a handwritten sign is that there is no way of knowing what his experience or expertise is. He may say that he is an electrician, but how can you know for sure? Mistakes can spell disaster, so you need to hire someone with the right experience for the job.
- Putting off maintenance to save money
Letting something deteriorate too much will do the opposite of saving you money – it will end up costing you a lot more to repair when you end up finally doing it. Those repairs could even result in replacing everything, which could cost a small fortune. Set up a schedule and a budget for maintaining your home and stick to it.
If you are looking for professionals to ensure your home maintenance is done the right way, get in touch with Showroom Condition. With everything from repairs to painting, we will ensure your property investment is kept in tip-top shape. Contact us to find out more.
